About Adelaide

South Australia is on the cusp of an economic boom. With our burgeoning defence, education and mining industries and strong population growth, the world is now looking at Adelaide as an exciting place to invest.

A 2006 study by KPMG listed Adelaide as one of the world’s top three most cost competitive cities to do business in and in a similar study in 2007 found Adelaide to be the best city to do business in Australia.

Adelaide has also been rated as one of the world's top 6 cities in which to live for lifestyle. (Economist Intelligence Unit's Liveability Survey 2007

Consumer confidence in South Australia is high, sitting well above the 100 point mark at 121.6 according to the BankSA State Monitor in August 2007. In addition business confidence in South Australia sits at a strong 125.6. Our strong business confidence is reflected in commitment to continued capital investment and job creation.

The value of major projects planned or underway in South Australia reached a record $44.8 billion in 2007 which reflected a trebling over the last three years. Projects such as the $1.5 billion Mawson Lakes Development Project, the $1.04 billion, 3000-allotment Evanston Urban Areas project, the $600 million The Parks Urban Renewal project and the $500 million Seaford Meadows Residential project are driving the total.

Accompanying this, the minerals sector in South Australia is experiencing an unprecedented boom. BHP Billiton’s $7 billion expansion of its Olympic Dam mine at Roxby Downs is well underway and will one day become the world’s largest mining venture. Based on conservative predictions, projections indicate that the venture will require 654 additional employees.

The defence industry is also rapidly expanding in South Australia. We have won over $12 billion in defence contracts in the past 2 ½ years and in mid January 2008 South Australian based British company BAE Systems Australia announced a $775 million deal making it the Australian Defence Force's biggest supplier and consolidating Adelaide as the nation's defence industry hub.

All of these factors along with South Australia’s advanced manufacturing, technology and research sectors have lead to Adelaide consistently being ranked as one of the most preferred cities to live in by independent studies.
